These are extremely optimistic statements by Elon Musk at the Cybercab launch event.
At the "We, Robot" event that just took place in the US, Elon Musk officially introduced Cybercab. This is Tesla's latest autonomous vehicle project that is expected to become a major turning point in the field of automated transportation.
The highlight of Cybercab is its fully autonomous driving capability with a steering wheel and pedal-less design, using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to navigate complex urban environments. The vehicle is specifically designed for crowded cities with the ability to handle chaotic traffic and constantly changing road conditions.
The tech billionaire has demonstrated several vehicles that move without a person or steering wheel. Elon Musk said event attendees can also test riding on these driverless vehicles.
Elon Musk: Driverless cars will save time and be safer
Musk also shared the company's vision of fully autonomous vehicles. He said the world could soon move to driverless cars, making vehicles more efficient. He explains:
"We're going to move from supervised driving to unsupervised driving, where you can sleep and wake up at your destination."
During the keynote, Musk argued that while cars are expensive to buy and maintain, they are only used about 10 hours per week, which is about 5.9% of the total week. He said that car use would increase "fivefold or even tenfold if vehicles were automated."
Musk believes that users will get 5 to 10 times more value for the money they spend on cars. "You get your time back. This is very important," Musk added.
He also believes that the cost of operating autonomous vehicles will be cheaper than traditional vehicles. Musk said vehicle operating costs could be reduced from $1 per mile to $0.20 per mile.
